Impact of eleutherococcus senticosus and rhodiola rosea on capacity of enterobacteria isolated from calves suffering from gastrointestinal issues to resist lysozyme and interfere with interferon

The study was conducted to investigate the factors that could reduce the persistence of opportunistic microorganisms. The effects of plant adaptogens as Eleutherococcus senticosus and Rhodiola rosea on the anti-lysozyme and anti-interferon activities of enterobacteria were investigated. In vitro laboratory experiments were performed to determine the inhibitory effects of these adaptogens on Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis cultures with anti-lysozymic and anti-interferon properties. The cultures were obtained from calves with gastrointestinal symptoms. The co-incubation method was used to measure anti-lyzozyme and anti-interferon activities before and after exposure to extracts. Extracts of roots of Eleutherococcus senticosus and Rhodiola rosea were found to significantly inhibit persistence of microorganisms. Thus, the values of anti-lysozyme activity in E. coli cultures were 1.4 times lower after exposure to Eleutherococcus senticosus compared to the control and 1.1 times lower after exposure to Rhodiola rosea; anti-interferon activity decreased 2.3 times and 1.6 times, respectively. In P. mirabilis cultures, anti-lysozyme activity decreased 2.3 times after treatment with decoction of Eleutherococcus senticosus, and 1.7 after Rhodiolae rosea treatment. The level of ant-interferone activity decreased 2.4 and 2 times, respectively. Suppression of persistence factors allows reducing the pathogenic potential of enteric bacteria. This study is of practical significance and justifies the use of adaptogenic substances and their derivatives in conjunction with conventional methods of treating and preventing opportunistic infections.
