Abstract

The organization and implementation of measures to eliminate the outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in the territory of the Kemerovo Region - Kuzbass is discussed. On May 22, 2025, the information about the epizootic death of 13 pigs was received by a subordinate institution of the State Veterinary Service of the Kemerovo Region - Kuzbass. Based on the history, clinical signs, and data from the pathological autopsy, there were grounds for suspicion of acute poisoning as well as African swine fever. The specialists of the GBU Osinnikovskaya SBBZh (Osinnikovskaya Station for the Control of Animal Diseases) took samples of pathological material to exclude major animal diseases as African swine fever, salmonellosis, pasteurellosis, and to confirm the diagnosis of poisoning. The taken material samples (fragments of the spleen, liver, heart, lungs, kidney, mandibular (submandibular), portal, lymphatic nodes, stomach contents) were sent to the Novokuznetsk Regional Veterinary Laboratory where polymerase chain reaction diagnostics detected the DNA of the African swine fever virus in all samples. In accordance with the veterinary rules approved by the Ministry of Agriculture Order No. 37 dated January 28, 2021, and based on the laboratory-confirmed diagnosis of African swine fever (ASF), the Governor of the Kemerovo Region - Kuzbass issued the decree establishing restrictive measures. In the Kemerovo Region - Kuzbass, the programs on major animal diseases had been developed, and they were adjusted depending on the update of veterinary rules and the epizootic situation in the region. Thanks to the operational actions of the State Veterinary Service of the Kemerovo Region - Kuzbass, the animal disease was localized, necessary urgent measures were taken, and as a result, the pathogen of the disease did not spread beyond the focus.
